Hamish Deery

Total Body PET NIF Scientist

Dr Hamish Deery is a neuroscientist whose work has focused on the scientific and emerging clinical value of high temporal resolution functional PET (fPET) imaging for measuring the moment-to-moment dynamics of cerebral metabolism and metabolic brain networks in humans. Hamish is a member of the Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab led by A/Professor Sharna Jamadar at Monash Biomedical Imaging. Using advanced multimodal brain mapping and modelling approaches, we have characterised how dynamic glucose metabolism constrains large-scale network organisation in ageing and insulin resistance, identifying mechanisms that confer vulnerability to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Through the use of total body PET, this work is being extended to study how the coordinated and dynamic metabolic activity of other bodily systems influences the integrity of brain networks that support cognition and how they are altered in ageing and disease.
