Diana Patalwala

NIF Scientist | Multi-modal Preclinical and Materials Imaging

Diana Patalwala is a Multi-modal Preclinical and Materials Imaging Scientist at the Western Australian Node of the National Imaging Facility (WA NIF), with over 13 years of experience supporting advanced imaging research, technology development and multidisciplinary collaborations. In her current role as a NIF Scientist, she supports the operation, development and application of specialised imaging platforms, providing technical expertise, experimental design guidance, user training and research support to academic, clinical and industry partners. Her expertise spans a broad range of imaging modalities, including preclinical small-animal CT, in vivo optical imaging (bioluminescence and multispectral fluorescence), ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging, and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) for materials characterisation. She has extensive experience supporting preclinical imaging studies, particularly in small-animal models, as well as facilitating non-destructive 3D imaging applications across materials science, engineering, geology and related industries.

Diana holds a Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Her ongoing doctoral research at Curtin University investigates cerebral microvascular flow and blood–brain barrier changes in preclinical models of Alzheimer’s disease, using advanced MRI and contrast-enhanced ultrasound techniques. She works closely with researchers and industry partners to identify suitable imaging solutions, optimise experimental protocols, troubleshoot technical challenges and translate imaging capabilities into meaningful research outcomes. She is particularly interested in facilitating multidisciplinary collaborations, developing innovative imaging applications and helping researchers and industry partners maximise the capabilities of specialised imaging technologies.
