The University of Sydney Node’s capabilities span the translational health research pipeline, from benchtop to bedside, with sophisticated imaging capabilities. The NIF imaging capabilities of the USYD node sit within Sydney Imaging Core Research Facility, a biomedical imaging facility with a comprehensive suite of preclinical and clinical imaging modalities, radiochemistry, and a state-of-the-art hybrid theatre.
Additionally, the University of Sydney is the lead institution for the Australian Imaging Service (AIS) which provides federated access to data and analysis pipelines across the participating XNAT deployments, provided by a single sign-on through the Australian Access Federation.
Sydney Imaging, in partnership with Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) and NIF, established the Australian National Total Body PET Facility in 2023, located in the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Royal North Shore Hospital. The Facility is Australia’s first research-dedicated Total Body PET, enabling whole-body imaging to understand systemic molecular processes in health and disease and drug interactions during therapeutic development.
As part of a research partnership with Siemens Healthineers, Sydney Imaging established the Cima.X 3T MRI Clinical-Research Facility at the Charles Perkins Centre in 2025, the first of its kind in NSW. The Cima.X 3T scanner features powerful gradient technology, enabling faster, sharper, and more detailed imaging. Clinical imaging capabilities at the node also include access to 3T MRI facilities at the Brain and Mind Centre in Camperdown, accessed via I-MED Radiology.
Preclinical imaging NIF capabilities include a high resolution PET-CT and a 3T MRI with PET insert for simultaneous MRI/PET. A Polaris MR hyperpolariser with parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP), the first of its kind in Australia, will be installed in November 2026, which can be accessed in conjunction with the 7T preclinical MRI system at Sydney Imaging.
Researchers have access to radiochemistry facilities at the Brain and Mind Centre to support the development and optimisation of novel and bespoke radiotracers. The node will also establish a second radiochemistry facility at the Royal North Shore Hospital site to support Total Body PET research in late 2027.

Facility staff, along with NIF Scientists, support the research user community through assistance with project design, project management, staff/student training and, where appropriate, data analysis.
