The Florey has reported on an MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) rapidly becoming a treatment of choice for essential tremor. It is a relatively new technology for this nervous system disorder that causes involuntary shaking or trembling, mostly in the hands.
Florey imaging experts work alongside Austin Health specialists working in the Florey’s Heidelberg brain imaging facility.
The $6 million MRI scanner and focused ultrasound equipment is the only such platform in Australia within a research institute. It was jointly funded for research purposes by The Florey, the University of Melbourne, and the National Imaging Facility (NIF) – under the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) – and the Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund.
