Advancing the fight against motor neurone disease

There is currently no definitive way to track and predict the progression of motor neurone disease (MND). Dr Thomas Shaw from UQ School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is exploring innovative ways to map disease progression using NIF’s MRI capabilities, backed by FightMND.

“We are using MRI scans of the brain to first map the body on the surface of the brain. Then we will identify metabolites, or brain chemicals that change throughout the course of the disease, to create an MND map,” said Dr Shaw.

The research will build a ‘MetaBody map’ software, which will be made available for clinicians to help improve diagnosis and enable treatments to start sooner for patients.
