NIF welcomes recognition of research infrastructure in Strategic Examination of Research and Development report

Ambitious Australia, the final report of Strategic Examination of R&D (SERD), underscores the need for high-quality research infrastructure in Australia.

NIF welcomes the release of this report: in particular, acknowledging the crucial role of research infrastructure to leverage Australia’s scientific strengths, help address national priorities, and foster new industries.

The report finds that access to high-quality research infrastructure is critical for both foundational research and for RD&I businesses.

The panel consulted with industry, universities, peak bodies, government, First Nations peoples and the public.

Through its survey, 83% of respondents called for better coordination of research infrastructure, highlighting concerns about NCRIS funding expiring from 2028–29, the need for longer funding cycles, and an independent oversight body.

“Access to high-quality research infrastructure is also critical for both foundational research and RD&I businesses. The future of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) is at risk. NCRIS faces a funding cliff in coming years, and many existing arrangements are nearing an end.”

Australia’s R&D ecosystem is an important requisite within the government’s plan for a Future Made in Australia. This includes achieving net zero, developing critical technologies, and building sovereign capability.

An effective R&D system increases the benefits of science, research and innovation for Australia. It can help secure our long-term prosperity, security and wellbeing.

Future jobs, productivity and prosperity depend on investment in R&D, underpinned by collaborative national research infrastructure.
