From discovery to impact: innovation on display at NIF 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting

“It’s so energising seeing what everyone’s doing,” was the enthusiastic feedback from a participant at the National Imaging Facility’s 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM), recently hosted in Adelaide by SA Node SAHMRI.

The ASM brought together imaging users, infrastructure specialists, industry partners, advisory committee members and many others in the wider imaging community – locally, nationally and internationally.

Recently appointed Board member Dr Elane Zelcer said the ASM was a “showcase of the impactful research that NIF Fellows and users are doing”.

“It was captivating to hear these examples of great potential and exciting innovation,” she said.

The ASM began with imaging community workshops that ranged from consultation sessions to design, to updates over areas such as MRI, human molecular imaging translation, PET networks, the Australian Imaging Service and many more.

The next day, people gathered for the scientific symposium that covered preclinical imaging, techniques, data and digital infrastructure, and power pitches.

“The diversity of research presentations was very impressive. It was especially pleasing to see the clinical applications of imaging studies that have been conducted over many years,” said outgoing Board Chair Prof Margaret Harding.

Winner of the poster prize this year was Vicky He from the Australian Epilepsy Project, who put forward her research from the Epilepsy Neuroinformatics Group. We congratulate her efforts.

And we applaud power pitch winners Dr Jennifer Rumbel and her team from the University of Newcastle, pitching about their work Deadly images: Two ways of seeing.

We especially thank our hosts Dr Edward Robins and Adam O’Connell, the NIF Board, NIF Central team and our sponsors. “Your leadership, hard work and backing make this work possible and help us keep pushing imaging science forward,” said NIF COO Sarah Flaim.

Our ASM’s gold sponsors GE HealthCare, Siemens Healthineers and United Imaging Healthcare, and silver sponsors 4DMedical, AXT PTY LTD, Bruker and Mediso Medical Imaging Systems, contributed to help make this meeting possible.
